Did You Know--General Motors

"There are some 13,000 porn films made in the United States generating near $100 billion per year. General Motors owns DirectTV, which distributes over 40 million streams of porn into American homes every month. AT&T and GM rake in approximately 80 percent of all porn dollars."

And now through the bail out, we the people own General Motors. The payback then, will be through porn profits?

I would like to see some support for that statement about GM owning DirectTV in the linked article at blogcritics.org.

To the best of my knowledge & as supplemented by info at the DirectTV corporate website, the path from Hughes Electronics to DirectTV has been a complex one. GM bought Hughes in 1985, and issued GMH shares to GM shareholders as tracking stock. GM later spun off GMH and News Corporation, and via various exchanges of stock DirectTV ended up as a stand-alone company).

If you look at the most recent 10-K annual report and proxy statement for DirectTV, there are only three shareholders who hold in excess of 5% of DirectTV stock, and none of them are GM.

Obviously, there may be info that I'm not aware of, but I sincerely doubt the veracity of that blunt statement that GM owns DirectTV.

I checked a number of sources, most from the early 2000's. This one seemed the most recent. However, it is possible they are all citing the same source.

From the webpage relating to the cost basis of DirectTV stock:

"Upon the split-off of Hughes Electronics Corporation from General Motors Corporation and the merger of Hughes with a wholly owned subsidiary of News Corporation on December 22, 2003, the former shareholders of GM Class H common stock received .82322 shares of Hughes common stock and .09207 News Corporation Preferred ADSs (subsequently, News Corporation completed a reincorporation in the United States in November 2004."

I believe that spin off in late 2003 cut the final link between GM and DirectTV f/k/a Hughes Electronics Corporation.

There certainly are other issues related to distribution of porn, but alleged GM [U.S. taxpayer] ownership of DirectTV is, I think, not one of them.

Thank you for the information--I'll follow that source.

Indeed, General Motors no longer controls Hughes or Direct TV. Fox News Corporation owns and controls Direct TV, not GM. GM sold that portion of the business to Fox, and spun the rest of Hughes off. The portion left was placed into a trust for GM employees - but this does not include Direct TV, or any of it's programming. GM is actually a company creating jobs in the US - not a bad thing at all.

I know I'm a bit late this this discussion, but if you find this tidbit interesting, you may want to read "Empire of Illusion" by Chris Hedges. He mentions this very thing in the second chapter.
