Boko Haram killed 9 in Nigerian village

I grew up in and was baptized in the Church of the Brethren, as were my parents, grandparents, great grandparents and siblings.  Even as a little girl I enjoyed hearing the stories of taking Christ to the Nigerians, and eventually there was a strong Brethren church there, EYN, Ekklesiyar Yan’uwa a Nigeria. The Brethren Newsline of May 20, 2014, reported that five EYN members were killed by Boko Haram who are seeking a pure Islamic state for Nigeria. Nine were killed in the village of Shawa.

The wife of EYN president, Rebecca Dali writes: “We need your prayers.  Now there is virtually no security in Borno State, especially outside Maiduguri.  Many have fled to Cameroon.  In refugee camps in Cameroon and for some who are displaced there was no food, medical, or other kinds of help.  The government, even when warned, does not stop the violence.  People are suffering.”

The school from which the girl were kidnapped was established by a Brethren missionary couple now living in Kansas.

Sue after the sale

“Donald Sterling, who has co-owned the Los Angeles Clippers with his wife since 1981, sued the National Basketball Association a day after she agreed to sell the team for $2 billion following the uproar over Sterling’s racist comments.

Sterling, 80, seeks more than $1 billion in damages, claiming the NBA violated his constitutional rights by banning him from the sport for life, fining him $2.5 million and taking steps to strip him of ownership of the team solely on basis of a conversation with his lover he said was illegally recorded.”

http://www.newsmax.com/Newsfront/Donald-Sterling-NBA-Clippers-lawsuit/2014/05/30/id/574363#ixzz33ISJknkC

I know nothing about the law, but unless racist comments with his mistress in a private conversation was included in a contract of 33 years ago, I think he has a case. He has been defamed, humiliated in public and stripped of his property.  And they have what?  Illegally recorded and sold to the media conversation.

Shinseki and Carney go bye-bye

Two useful solutions for VA scandal

Paul Krugman, eat crow. Romney suggested private vouchers for veterans and was roundly ridiculed on the left. However, Obama said there were problems in 2008 and did nothing but ask for more money. It's control, not money. VA health system is socialized medicine, the direction all leftists want us to go. The pro-choice crowd wants no choice for education, veterans' health, light bulbs, etc. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/14/opinion/krugman-vouchers-for-veterans-and-other-bad-ideas.html?_r=0

It wouldn't take a genius: give the veterans vouchers to introduce some competition and reduce the wait time, and get rid of the unions. Why, when we already have civil service and professional organizations for every medical specialty, does there need to be union bosses calling the shots for veterans' health?

Shinseki takes the fall for the president

I'll only defend the president to this point. The VA has systemic problems that existed before January 2009. We know this because he claimed it so during his first campaign, and we know how he can be trusted on campaign promises to clean up problems with complete transparency.  SmileHowever, the VA medical system is our completely socialized medical component of government health care (we have four—Medicare, Medicaid and CHIP are private/public partnerships with government being heavy handed), and the failures are consistent with the philosophy of having the government own and run health care.

"Eric K. Shinseki resigned Friday as secretary of veterans affairs, taking responsibility for a scandal in the VA health-care system over excessive waiting times and cover ups of what he called “systemic” problems."

Head injuries in sports

Glad to see the president is getting up to speed on head injuries (especially in children). I blogged about this 7 years ago. Welcome aboard, Mr. President. I didn't even have a scandal or two to cover up. http://collectingmythoughts.blogspot.com/2007/11/head-injuries-in-sports-columbus.html

Dr. [Daniel] Amen, who has seen over 30,000 brain scans, says: "I would not let my children hit a soccer ball with their heads, play tackle football, or snowboard without a helmet. I encourage my own kids to play tennis, golf, table tennis, and track. Your brain matters. Respect and protect it."

If an NFL players has also played little league, high school and college football, imagine the trauma to his brain.

Glenn Beck’s monologue about rape statistics

The anti-Beck forces were out saying his producer and side-kick Stu was ridiculing the seriousness of rape, when in fact  he was questioning the phony rape statistics recently published for political reasons (need to hang on the female vote?). Most rapes happen to men, and on today’s radio show Glenn talks about how his father was raped as a young man. He’s irate that truth has been cheapened in this latest study about rape where feeling pressured or feeling sorry is equated with rape.

“I will not comply. You do not own my thoughts. A few things are very clear to me, and no amount of speech giving or bumper stickers or EPA, NSA, IRS threats will ever change the facts that are true.

These are just a few of them: My child’s fingers are not, nor will they ever be a gun. Those who survived the Holocaust did not do so because of white privilege. A Hollywood blacklist is exactly the same horror show, whether the names on that list are communists or conservatives. 2 plus 2 equals 4. Always has, always will. I don’t give a flying crap how you got there, as long as you got there, to 4. Global warming is not the same as global cooling or global climate change, which is different than global climate crisis and none of them have to do with the shootings in Chicago or the idea of regulating the very vapor that we as humans breathe out, that we all learn trees breathe in to grow. That is just as ridiculous as your straight face plan to now regulate cow farts.

I’m sorry, but I respectfully, lovingly, yet full-throated declare that is nonsense. I also declare the self-evident truth that racism is not about having high expectations. Racism is not about standards. And rape certainly is not about someone asking for sex too many times and then being sad when you turn them down.

If you had the facts on how brutal rape is, it shows how awful your peer-reviewed study questions really are. Let’s contrast and compare, shall we, America? Who is hurting women? Who is standing up for women? Who is defending them and who is using them, merely for political power?”

Helping the uninsured children of America

Of the 6.6 million uninsured American children in 2009 (7.2% of all children), about 2/3 were actually already eligible for health coverage through Medicaid or CHIP. About 40% of that 7.2% were children of illegal immigrants, but are American citizens by birth. Now with Obamacare, things will really be screwed up, and it's possible if CHIP funding lapses (which logically shouldn't be needed if we've got this other wonderful plan), there could be more uninsured children than before the ACA.

Now, I'm no math genius, but if 92.8% of all American children were insured either by private insurance or their parents' employer, and 40% of the uninsured were children of illegal immigrants, and 2/3 were eligible for a government plan already in place, were there no geniuses in this administration would could figure out a way to help these children without messing up every other child's plan?

God created male and female for a reason

". . . and God saw that it was good" is a familiar phrase in the first Chapter of Genesis--light, water, vegetation, stars, swarms of living creatures in the water and the heavens, beasts and cattle and creeping things. All are pronounced “good” working up to his best creation. And finally "God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it. . ." Then in the second chapter of Genesis we get more detail on what is good--instead of recording, "it was good" after God created Adam, he said, “It is NOT GOOD for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.”

There are virtually no differences between an Asian man and an African man--some skin cells and maybe hair texture. Nothing of importance. But between an Asian man and an Asian woman there are thousands of differences in brains, blood cells, skeletal systems, endocrine system and hormones, cardiovascular system, sexual organs, muscles and cells. Every cell has a sex. The blood of women has more water. Even our fingers are shaped differently. Women's hearts beat more rapidly. We respond differently to stress, as seen in MRIs. Women are better suited for life from their beginning--more than 140 male babies are conceived for every 100 females; by the time birth occurs, the ratio is 105 to 100, with the rest of the males dying in spontaneous abortions. That's because God wanted the human race to continue, and a new life needs both a mother and father--each new life getting something from each parent. You can redefine marriage if you wish, but not the plan.

Embracing change?

HIV/AIDS increasing among black gay men

"Published research does not provide definitive answers about why new HIV infections among young, black/African American gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) have increased. However, black/African American MSM of all ages experience racial disparities in health and are more likely than other gay and bisexual men of other races/ethnicities to encounter broader social and economic barriers. These and other factors place black/African American MSM at higher risk for HIV."  “In fiscal year (FY) 2011, approximately 41percent of the CDC’s budget was targeted to HIV prevention activities for MSM.” CDC fact sheet.

I am stunned that “research” is blaming racial disparities and homophobia for the increase in HIV at a time when gay sex is practically being pushed into the forefront of every news story, and everyone should be covered with Obamacare.

Here’s the score.  Anal sex is transmitting HIV, not poverty, not stigma, not society. And the more that is encouraged and normalized (by “safer” sex methods), the higher the transmission rate. Also, young people know there is treatment available if they develop HIV, so there is little reason to be cautious as men were becoming in the 80s.

New statistics from the New York Department of Health and Hygiene and the Centers for Disease Control show that, in New York City, the majority of 647 women who tested HIV-positive in 2012 acquired the virus through unprotected sex with bisexual men.

There is so much money being funneled into community based prevention and behavioral programs that recipients would be crazy to ever find a way to stop young men from having sex with each other an end the government gravy train. For example:

$111 million Expanded Testing Initiative (ETI)

$55 million to 34 states and cities  to support HIV testing services  for  minority at-risk populations.

Death and the Civil War—PBS

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/films/death/

The greatest loss of life of any U.S. war was the Civil War, where 1 in 5 Americans experienced the loss of someone they knew.  There was no system for burying the dead at that time as a responsibility of the government.  This film is fascinating history.  It is also on-line.

Napoleon Bonaparte Corbett

2nd great grand uncle, buried at Stones River National Battleground, died 1863 according to Find a Grave. Thanks to “cousin” Berta whose husband took the photo for sharing this. "Bonaparte was a Corporal in Company D 3rd Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry. His regiment was organized at Murfreesboro and Nashville, Tennessee and was mustered in for a three year enlistment on January 27, 1863 under the command of Colonel William C. Pickens."

Plains, Georgia is the site of the newest Chautauqua

Today in church at Lakeside I learned that Plains, Georgia is one of our newest Chautauqua locations with the help and support of President Carter. Representatives of Lakeside Chautauqua were on hand for the opening. Almost a century ago, many towns hosted traveling Chautauqua which brought music and the arts to rural communities. My father as a child attended a Chautauqua in Dixon, IL which had permanent buildings, and my mother attended the Chautauqua in Franklin Grove, IL which had sites for tents. The one in Plains seems to be a revitalization of one like that, and not a whole season like we have in Lakeside, Ohio and Chautauqua, NY. http://www.plainschautauqua.com/

Eastern Illinois University has Chautauqua information in its archive.  "Chautauquas were retreat camps, primarily for adults. The Chautauqua movement can be traced to 1874 at Lake Chautauqua, New York when a group of Protestant ministers began a training camp for Sunday school teachers. Chautauquas grew in popularity and spread throughout the country. The actual format of chautauqua programming varied within each camp. Some were more religious based, while others focused more on entertainment. The chautauqua movement peaked in the 1920's but declined as radio and other new technologies created new forms of entertainment and recreation for Americans." http://booth.library.eiu.edu/archon/index.php...

Déjà vu, but now it’s Syria

"But without U.S. involvement, the worst-case predictions are coming true: More than 160,000 people have been killed, more than 9 million have been displaced from their homes, and terrorists allied with al-Qaeda are establishing safe zones from which they can attack Europe and the United States."

Sorry, Washington Post, isn't this what we were told in 2003 about Hussein? Washington Post editorializes on how Obama has failed miserably in Syria. If Bush was so wrong about Iraq (had bi-partisan support and Clinton era intelligence) according to WaPo and other MSM, what makes them so sure about Syria?

How do Democrats get away with these lies

Watchdog.org is reporting that 308,000 Virginia voters are also registered elsewhere, according to an analysis of 22 states’ election records. How many of the 308,000 voters cast multiple ballots in a single election is not known, but the group Election Integrity Maryland found 164 individuals who voted in both states in 2012.

I volunteer at a free clinic in Columbus. I've yet to meet a client who didn't have ID--most are not driver's licenses but are provided by the state. They need it for government benefits. Why do Democrats lie about the importance of having an ID?

The church is a hospital for sinners, and also cares for the sick

We know why the church takes care of the sick--Jesus commanded it and also miraculously healed them himself setting the example and commanded his immediate disciples (of whom we are heirs) to do the same. Over the centuries the Christian church, particularly the Roman Catholic church, has been the largest social service agency. But why does the government do it when it picks and chooses (over the centuries) the sinners and the winners? Governments have killed far more people than religious leaders could even consider, plus they use religious sects (of any faith) to do the dirty work. In the U.S. we have the push for government health insurance when 85% of the citizens already were satisfied with what they had and a large portion of those who didn't have insurance were eligible for a minimal care level already provided. That's an inordinate amount of power to hand to any entity. At the same time, 55 million have been put to death with the government's blessing and regulated abortion industry.

Summer reading for teens

Last night my neighbor asked me about summer selections for reading for her 15 year old grandson. He has a school suggested list with 2 books required. I have no experience in what teens read, but I was surprised by the list. Seemed awfully mature (and depressing). One was Killer Angels, an historical novel about the Civil War and is used in military schools; another was The Help, about black women who worked as household help in the South of the early 60s, but the narrator is white. The last runaway--an English woman and the underground railroad—which my book club read this year. I read a lot as a teen--mostly historical fiction, but probably not what adults suggested.

So I checked the Internet for summer reading lists. Although there were a few classics, many I found disturbing. Like the one about a boy who lives in a homeless shelter with his spaced out mother because dad is in prison; a 5 year old growing up in 1 room because his mother has been held prisoner for 7 years (like the Cleveland story); Devil in the White City (scariest book I've ever read). But then, Les Miserables and Uncle Tom's Cabin (also on the list) aren't a walk in the park

What are your children/grandchildren reading this summer?

Last federal land acquisition—Organ Mountains in New Mexico

The Veterans Affairs medical scandal—or cover up--whichever

Just for the record--2 Columbus veterans (WWII and Korean War era) we know say our local VA facility is fabulous and they've never waited for care and have been treated very well. The current VA scandal--wait times particularly--has been known for years, or why else would Senator Obama have campaigned on it in 2008 as a way to blame Bush? But the truth is, and what will be pushed under the rug, a national health care system (we have 4--Medicare, Medicaid, VA and S-CHIP) run from Washington is just too big and bureaucratic--and he knew that going into his own push to nationalize health insurance for the rest of us.

The duping of Americans

If you look at the rationale for Electronic Medical Records, it was always about the data (which can be massaged, sold to the highest bidder and used for policy), because its value for health had never been decided. This should come as no surprise. It's the invention of Zeke Emanuel who said, "Vague promises of savings from cutting waste, enhancing prevention and wellness, installing electronic medical records and improving quality of care are merely 'lipstick' cost control, more for show and public relations than for true change." JAMA, Feb. 27, 2008.

And now this. . . and it won’t be the only invasion of your private records.

The federal government is piecing together a sweeping national “biosurveillance” system that will give bureaucrats near real-time access to Americans’ private medical information in the name of national security, according to Twila Brase, a public health nurse and co-founder of the Citizens Council for Health Freedom.

The Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response is currently seeking public comment on a 52-page draft of the proposed “National Health Security Strategy 2015-2018” (NHSS).

Eric Holder, racist in chief

Americans love special anniversaries. 60 years--1954 Brown v. Board of Education and 50 years--1964 Civil Rights Act and LBJ's Great Society. And of course, 2014 when Eric Holder and the Obama Administration prattle that America's made no progress and we're still just a bunch of racists (forgetting that the KKK, Jim Crow, and segregated education system belonged to Democrat policies).

So an 80 year old billionaire in a private conversation with his black mistress can undo trillions of dollars of government programs and transfers? Really an insult to our history and progress. But for the left, it's never enough, there's never progress for the progressives. Keep it churning or lose your jobs.

According to Eric Holder (who was allowed to speak at graduation) zero tolerance for violence in schools is racist and signifies resegregation. So, let's look at this. Little white boys in 3rd grade who are suspended for pointing a finger like a gun violate this policy and will be punished by a suspension, but a black child will get a pass for beating up a classmate on the bus? What is it called when Condi Rice is disinvited to speak at graduation? She probably would have given some inspiring advice to graduates; all Holder did was give a whiny political screed.

The Left’s War on Women

Michele Bachmann fostered 23 children before she got into politics. The Left never denied it, but criticized her for talking about it! After all, it was in her past and shouldn't be brought up. It’s not like she did something useful like being a community organizer. She didn't actually "raise them" was the criticism--some were short term. They also criticized her for not winning by larger margins, for raising support for her campaigns, for being a Democrat before she was a Republican, for how many chiefs of staff she had, etc., etc. She got more scrutiny than the President, whose time in office has been riddled with scandals. Just a part of the Democrat war on women who don't slide in to power on their husband's coattails (Clinton) or lie about their heritage by calling themselves Native Americans (Warren).

Graduation speakers play the race card

Michelle Obama and Eric Holder performed as the President's surrogates as graduation speakers complaining about race in America. What a terrible message for graduates. But what they didn't say was that under Obama, almost all measures for poverty, unemployment, income gap and social gains have worsened for blacks who supported him (13% of the electorate, 96% voted for him) . This administration defaults to race baiting when it flounders. I'm guessing that even college seniors have this figured out.

What the Rutgers graduates missed when they protested Condolezza Rice,

“a person who grew up poor in Jim Crow Alabama. Who lost a friend and playmate in 1963 when white supremacists bombed Birmingham’s Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. Who became an accomplished concert pianist before she tuned her ear to the more dissonant chords of international relations.

Secretary Rice was Phi Beta Kappa at the University of Denver and received a B.A. cum laude in political science—back before the worst grade a student had ever heard of was a B-.

The professor who influenced her most was Josef Korbel, Secretary of State Madeleine Albright’s father.

Secretary Albright and Secretary Rice don’t agree on much about international relations. But they don’t sit-in or teach-in at each other’s public appearances.

Secretary Rice got a master’s in political science from Notre Dame, a Ph.D. in political science from Denver and, in the meantime, was an intern at the Carter administration State Department and the Rand Corporation and studied Russian at Moscow State University.

She rose from assistant professor to provost at Stanford. (Ranked fifth-best university in America by U.S. News & World Report. You’re ranked 69th.) While she was doing that, she also served, from 1989 to 1991, as the Soviet expert on the White House National Security Council under President George H. W. Bush. . .

Condoleezza Rice was named National Security Adviser in December 2000, less than a year before some horrific events that you may know of. She became Secretary of State in 2005 during an intensely difficult period in American history . . . And she saw the job through to the end of the fraught and divisive George W. Bush presidency, making moral and ethical decisions of such a complex and contradictory nature that they would have baffled Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle . . .

Here you are graduating from Rutgers, which is, as I mentioned, the 69th-best university in America. Maybe Rutgers should add more vegan selections to its cafeteria fare. U.S. News & World Report scorekeepers go for that kind of thing. Actually, you’re tied for 69th with Texas A&M, an NFL first-round draft with a small college attached.”

Sensory overload

Last night I came across a website called Verge Network, created a few years back to feature the "missional movement" among churches (most seem to be mega churches--haven't yet found the source.) I looked through some very good preaching and high tech videos, but after an hour of browsing I felt I'd had enough of seeing preachers in jeans and t-shirts, dark, massive assembly halls, waving arms, spot lights, cluttered stages with guitars and Peaveys and floors littered with cords. But that's how "successful" churches do it these days. Join the culture in order to reach the culture.

A few centuries ago, soaring arches, stained glass windows, marble statues, and amazing organs and choirs were all meant to appeal to the senses, particularly for those who couldn't read. Nothing has changed, I guess—except then the churches seemed to be leading the culture.

Research commissioned by the Pew Center on the States

•Approximately 24 million—one of every eight—voter registrations in the United States are no longer valid or are significantly inaccurate.
•More than 1.8 million deceased individuals are listed as voters.
•Approximately 2.75 million people have registrations in more than one state.
Voter ID can't cure all these problems, but sure couldn't hurt.

A message for the White Privilege Conference 2014

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LT11g8W524#t=111

Insults whites, demeans minorities.

“I refuse to be cheapened by your poorly formed malicious ideology. The Age of Enlightenment was about just that; the idea that as an individual, I can reach for the stars and control my own destiny. Racism has no impact on that, because excellence goes before an individual paving the way to their goals.”  Stacey Washington, Conservative radio host and blogger.

Tolerance is not a value of the left

If you ever asked where's the fairness or tolerance and where's the love, forget it. It's not your mother's 1960s. Leftists/feminists/socialists/communists were never about fairness or tolerance--only power.

Two campus movements--the stamp out white privilege and the ginned up rape crisis--are actually about destroying men. If the college your son or daughter has chosen requires these, then don't pay that ridiculous tuition--go elsewhere. Maybe a trade school where they will learn something useful.

I really doubt that a gay student will be brought up on rape charges for an unwanted kiss, but a straight kid will be; and I'm pretty sure that no matter how aggressive she is, there will be very few daughters being charged with holding the reins of power.

This year's White Privilege conference included sessions on the Tea Party and Climate Change.

“Miss Beazley’s arrival at the White House caused quite a stir, gaining international media coverage and her own appearance on CSPAN.

She, and a chagrined-looking Barney were the subjects of a 2005 White House video titled “A Very Beazley Christmas,” in which various politicians are smitten with the new pooch as Barney is pawed out of the limelight.”

Celebrating Brown v. Board of Education

Although true, presenting this as a black and white discussion is unfortunate. The Democrats have simply absconded with history. And this is important in remembering Brown v. Board of Education and other legislation fought for in the 1950s this year.

Transgendered military

The New York Times this week claimed 15,000 members of the military are transgendered (mostly male to female according to other sources). That would mean over 1% of the military are transgendered. The Center of Excellence for Transgender Health at University of California at San Francisco estimates 1 in 30,000 people is a transwoman (biologically male) and 1 in 100,000 people is transman (biologically female). Even if every transgendered person in America were now active duty military, that’s a long way from 15,000. Or, correct my math.

Polish Sausage and Cabbage Soup Crock Pot

I’m using my crock pot today for Corned Beef, but this would have been a good one too for this chilly, not so May like day.

1 carrot, shredded it fine
1 large onion, chopped
2 teaspoons caraway seeds, crushed (optional)

Directions:

Place potatoes, cabbage, carrot, onion, caraway seeds, sausage, pepper and salt in crock pot. Pour broth over all. Cover, cook on low for 10 - 12 hours or high for 5 - 6 hours.

Obama is very wealthy, but demonizes the rich

“According to financial disclosure forms released this week, the president and first lady listed assets worth between $2 million and $7 million for 2013, of which $1 million to $5 million were in Treasury notes, as reported by International Business Times.

I can’t help but note that the Obamas’ net worth at the end of 2007 was “only” $1.3 million. The $7 million figure represents a 438% increase! Yes, I’m sure that’s change he can believe in, but what about the rest of us?”

Warren Buffett huge supporter of abortion

Liberal billionaire Warren Buffett, the “Oracle of Omaha,” has donated more than $1.2 billion to abortion organizations from 2001 to 2012--$289,811,421 to Planned Parenthood. That's enough money to abort 2.7 million babies--the population of Chicago, or Kiev. If you give $1,000 to a ballot initiative to defend traditional marriage, that’s controversial. If you give $1.25 billion to promote abortion, journalists, who are wildly pro-abortion, don’t dare see any controversy.

http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2014/05/13/warren-buffet-donates-12-billion-to-abortion-groups/

One of the reasons Democrats, the party that supports abortion, are so eager for loose immigration laws is that our birth rate is below replacement and we have no way to sustain our standard of living or pay for our social benefits. It takes 2.1 children per woman for a generation to replace itself; ours is 1.88.

Uptalk

I hate it. It's that imaginary question mark you hear at the end of a statement. And it's not just young people sounding like Valley Girls. I remember attending a workshop back in the early 90s lead by a colleague (who will remain nameless, but is about my age) whose uptalk was so bad I couldn't even pay attention because I thought she was asking questions instead of making statements.... Uptalk is used more by women than men and it makes them sound weak and tenuous.

Example: I'm a librarian? And I'm here to explain the Dewey Decimal System? No, that's not John Dewey? He's the philosopher and education guy? Melville is our guy??

Now, go forth and make statements--unless you're asking questions.

A mother’s prayer for her 5 year old Ben who is dying

Lord, comfort your beautiful son in these next few days. Give him peace. And alleviate his pain. Show him the way into heaven and promise me, You'll be the first to greet him. Wipe away his tears and let him know we won't be that far behind him. Tell him to look out for his big brother and baby sisters while they navigate this life. Perhaps you can introduce him to his sibling we lost in-utero more than two years ago. I'm sure his relatives that are there waiting won't have a problem recognizing him for themselves. He's going to love all of the animals - frogs and snakes are his favorite - and he's going to be thrilled to have his own wings. I'm sure he'd love playing with David's slingshot, too! And God, grant us peace, as well. Those who are left behind. As we come to grips with our new future without Ben being close. As we find the grace you've given us and discover joy in the knowledge that You're carrying all of us in the palm of Your hand.

We are scared. We are hurt. We are sad. But we trust You. For You are Good.

Amen.

Modal verbs, can, could, may, might, must, ought, shall, should, will, would

27 million men, women, and children are trafficking victims at any given time.  Boko Haram is adding terrorism to the centuries old African slave trade and religious persecution by kidnapping Christian school girls.

“It ought to concern every person, because it’s a debasement of our common humanity. It ought to concern every community, because it tears at the social fabric. It ought to concern every business, because it distorts markets. It ought to concern every nation, because it  endangers public health and fuels violence and organized crime. I’m talking about the injustice, the outrage, of human trafficking, which must be called by its true name – modern slavery.” President Barack Obama, September 25, 2012

This would be a much stronger statement without all the "oughts."  For instance, "Slavery concerns every person because it is a debasement of our common humanity." A modal verb is an auxiliary verb which is used with another verb to talk about possibility, probability, permission, intention, etc. Sounds preachy and finger wagging without any action intended.

The next victim group

Imagine if next year Rednecks became a protected victim group, everyone who has shared this photo, or laughed at it, or "liked" it, would lose their job.

CRC on labor unions, March issue

Ever wonder what it would be like if radical unions and their allies gained control of New York City? Wonder no more.  “Labor Watch” reports on how the nation’s most powerful union local, Service Employees International Union 1199, and its radical allies such as former ACORN leader Bertha Lewis, now dominate city government. The key: they successfully backed Bill de Blasio, the city’s new mayor.

Wall Street Journal wrote a stinging editorial on de Blasio’s payoff to his cronies in the city’s teachers’ union via a new contract. The sweetheart deal “is walking back a decade of [school] reforms and blowing the bank” on $5.5 billion in pay raises for teachers.

CRC senior editor Matthew Vadum exposes a related phenomenon: the increasing presence of labor union bosses in the secretive, pro-Democratic funding powerhouse known as the Democracy Alliance. Co-founder George Soros’s son Jonathan accidentally left behind a partial membership list at the Chicago Ritz, and it shows that new members of the donor group include leaders from Workers United and Communication Workers of America, as well as Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers.

Bullies (paid) of the worst kind—race and ethnicity

When I was working back in the 90s at Ohio State, I attended a number of workshops on being sensitive to people of other cultures and abilities. Most were pretty good, because you might not notice how difficult access is to buildings, or the strain on necks and arms for high counters and closed doors unless it was brought to your attention. But some were not so good, like recognizing cultural differences and the speaker could barely speak English or the body odor was so overwhelming it filled the room. So I'm wondering about these new workshops to convince those of European descent, particularly men, that they are the scum of the earth and the source of all problems from global warming to the kidnapping of Nigerian school girls. We know it by another name, bullying. And, if it were me, I'd look into an EEO complaint if attending one was a requirement--for anything--particularly reprisal. (Federal fair employment laws prohibit discrimination and require the government to provide equal employment opportunity without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disabling condition or reprisal.)

Jackie Kennedy’s letters to a priest

Fr-Joseph-Leonard-and-JKB-with-roses-at-All-Hallows-College-1950--213x300[1]

Here's something to remember about private letters. In the U.S. they (content) belong to the writer (or estate), but in England (and I assume Ireland) they (content) belong to the recipient. Regardless, I think it's tacky to sell Mrs. Kennedy's private letters to a priest. Although technically this was an act of friendship not confession, who knows how she saw it. They should have been returned to her daughter.

The Nigerian school girls

Michelle Obama's comments about the abducted Nigerian girls has gotten some attention, "In these girls, Barack and I see our own daughters." All North and South Americans could be reminded that we can see our fellow citizens with African heritage in this tragedy.  This reenacts in the 21st century what Arab (Muslim) and African tribal groups, where reducing your enemy to slavery was the custom, contributed to the slave trade of the 17th and 18th centuries.  Europeans couldn't get to the interior of Africa (just as they aren't having much luck finding these girls today) so had to rely on those who knew the territory.  It was lucrative for all involved--Arabs, Africans and Europeans (especially Dutch and Portuguese). Today's slave trade is far larger than the Atlantic slave trade of 5 centuries ago, much of it for sex and cheap labor of children.

“The sex trafficking of boys is often hidden, reflecting cultural taboos in many parts of the world. In Afghanistan and coastal Sri Lanka, boys are more likely than girls to be subjected to prostitution; in Mexico and Central America, boy migrants are vulnerable to commercial sexual exploitation en route to the United States; boys in Southeast Asia are exploited in prostitution; to a lesser extent, men are victims of sex trafficking; in recent years, Brazilian men were identified in forced prostitution in Spain and men were identified as sex trafficking victims in the United States.” U.S. State Department report on Trafficking, 2013

American Jesus

Today I'm previewing a DVD, "American Jesus, " which shows the response of many Christian groups to the culture--from rodeo pastors, to surfers, to bikers, former porn stars, reaction to materialism, yoga, snake handlers and athletes. Some I knew about, but most I didn't. There’s no mention of gay churches, or mainline churches that raise funds for “social justice” causes, or those who pray to mother/father gods.

It's pretty good and fair with just straight filming of many groups allowing them to explain why the traditional organized church doesn't work for them--up to about 50 minutes in, and then Franky Schaeffer (son of L'abri founder) takes over the narration. And since he's moved from right wing evangelical, pro-lifer, over to the dark side, it takes a hard left turn--anti-Bush, anti-Israel and pro-Obama. Says he doesn't trust the Bible, and his Christianity isn't based on the Bible (no shock there). The film morphs to a PBS interpretation of Christianity.

The culture, particularly the media, love nothing more than a famous turn coat--unless the celebrity/author/movie star are left wing humanists and have moved right. It's almost as if a curtain was pulled back and you see the point of the film when Schaeffer begins. It is, however, very well done and eerily convincing. The literature says "street date May 13, 2014, price $19.98. I have no idea if this means theaters or store. But don't be fooled. It is what it is.

Caring for elderly parents, guest blogger, Jacqueline Marcell, author of Elder Rage

“For eleven years I pleaded with my ‘challenging’ elderly father to allow a caregiver to help him with my ailing mother, but he always insisted on taking care of her himself. Every caregiver I hired soon sighed in exasperation, ‘Jacqueline, I just can't work with your father. His temper is impossible to handle and he’s not going to accept help until he's on his knees himself.’

When my father’s inability to continue to care for my mother nearly resulted in her death, I stepped in despite his loud protests. It was heart-breaking as one minute he’d be my loving dad and then some trivial little thing would set him off and he’d call me nasty names and throw me out of the house the next. I took him to several doctors, only to be flabbergasted when he could act completely normal when he needed to.

Finally I stumbled upon a thorough neurologist, specialized in dementia, who put my parents through a battery of blood, neurological, memory tests and P.E.T. scans. After ruling out numerous reversible forms of dementia, such as a B-12 and thyroid deficiency, and evaluating their medications, I was stunned by the diagnosis of Stage One Alzheimer's in both of my parents–something all their other doctors missed entirely.

What I'd been coping with was the beginning of Alzheimer’s, which starts very intermittently and appears to come and go. I didn't understand that my father was addicted and trapped in his own engrained bad behavior of a lifetime of screaming and yelling to get his way, but that it was coming out intermittently in inconsistent spurts of irrationality. I also didn't understand that demented does not mean dumb (a concept not widely appreciated), and that he was still socially adjusted never to show his ‘Hyde’ side to anyone outside the family. Conversely, my mother was as sweet and lovely as she’d always been.

Alzheimer's makes up 60-80 percent of all dementias and there's no stopping the progression nor is there yet a cure. However, if identified early there are four FDA medications (Aricept, Exelon, Razadyne and Namenda–and many more in clinical trials) that in most people can mask dementia symptoms and keep the patient in the early independent stage longer.

Once my parents were properly treated for the Alzheimer’s, as well as the often-present depression in dementia patients, and then my father’s aggression, I was able to optimize fluid and nutrition with much less resistance. I was also able to manage the rollercoaster of challenging behaviors. Instead of logic and reason, I learned to use distraction and redirection. I capitalized on their long-term memories and instead of arguing the facts, I lived in their realities of the moment. I also learned to just go-with-the-flow and let hurtful comments roll off. And most importantly, I was able to get my father to accept two wonderful live-in caregivers. Then with the tremendous benefit of adult day health care five days a week for my parents and a support group for me, everything finally started to fall into place.
Alzheimer's disease afflicts more than 5.4 million Americans, but millions go undiagnosed for many years because early warning signs are chalked up to stress and a ‘normal’ part of aging. Since one out of eight is afflicted with Alzheimer’s by age 65, and nearly half by age 85, healthcare professionals of every specialty should know the 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s and help educate patients and families so everyone can save time, money–and a fortune in Kleenex!”

We had a wonderful brunch after church at our daughter's with 2 new recipes that we all loved—a baked egg/shredded potato/cheese casserole and a ‘French toast blackberry’ baked dish with warm syrup. Told favorite "mom stories." Amazing how similar my son and SIL stories were--I guess little boys are all alike. A fun day. I received a lovely plant in a cute “watering can,” and a $25 gift card for Barnes and Noble.

D.E.A.R. to defeat Alzheimer’s

While the primary focus of the D.E.A.R program is Alzheimer's prevention; following these simple lifestyle and dietary modifications can also prevent or lessen the symptoms of cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, joint and spine disease and many other health issues.

1) Diet--a food ratio at each meal that is one-third carbs, one-third protein, and one-third good fats.

2) Exercise--“3 Ss - Stretching, Strengthening, and Stepping” - all to boost brawn and brain power.

3) Accentuate your brain reserve—challenge your brain to allow more blood flows into neural regions and form new connections, daily "brain boosters," such as math problems, sections to read aloud, lists to memorize, organizational tasks.

4) Rest and recovery—relaxation and sleep, prayer, meditation, and optimism (worriers have poor health)

Read more here at Dr. Vincent Fortanasce's  web site.

“Obesity, smoking, lack of physical activity, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol are some of the culprits. . . .  So keeping these under control is crucial.  Depression is another risk factor for memory loss, so managing stress and staying socially connected is also important.  B vitamins may prevent dementia in those who are deficient and there are some simple blood tests that can detect this.  For the vast majority of people, however, there are no prescription medications that have been proven to prevent dementia. This means that a brain-healthy lifestyle is really our best bet for delaying the onset of memory loss.” Dr. P. DeBlasio and the teachers’ unions

Will Cain has made a film about a charter school, Success Academy, in NYC where his son is enrolled. He's thrilled with the school--Will is from a small town with one school, he had no idea that public schools in NYC could be so bad. This school has the highest test scores in the state--a school of underprivileged, black and brown children (32% Latinos and 38% African-Americans) with single parents, bad living conditions, you name it, and these kids overcame what the research said was impossible given their economic and family status. They are testing higher than the kids of the one percenters! And Mayor de Blasio, a Sandanista supporter who honeymooned in Cuba, has decided the charter school must be closed as, "not in the best interest of the children." Ha! Not in the best interest of the teachers unions. http://www.cnn.com/2014/03/07/opinion/cain-charter-de-blasio/

It’s just us—the gay lobby

HGTV has withdrawn (aka fired them) a new program hosted by two Christian brothers (twins, it looks like) who had the audacity to speak of the "homosexual agenda" along with a long list of sins of heterosexuals specifically listed in the Bible—abortion, infidelity, adultery.  And their father protested at abortion clinics!  It seems they believe marriage is about more than “love.”  One brother had actually led a prayer rally outside the Democratic National Convention in 2012.  How awful—the party that booed God and voted for abortion in its platform had people praying peacefully outside.

Homosexuals have successfully built a TV and literary image of "just folks like the rest of you, give us a chance" and now they are becoming their own worst nightmare of bigotry and anti-Christian assaults.  HGTV has had a very strong gay presence in all its programs both with hosting and in their real estate shows. It has contributed to the "just folks" image, but are losing it fast.

Think of the filth, violence and silliness you can see on TV—but gays object to this? You know no script about abortion or gay lifestyle would be on the show, but it is their private beliefs that can’t be tolerated by this lobby.

“The Benhams, who are graduates of Liberty University, said they were saddened to hear about HGTV’s decision.

“With all of the grotesque things that can be seen and heard on television, you would think there would be room for two twin brothers who are faithful to our families, committed to biblical principles, and dedicated professionals,” they wrote.”

Remember—he promised to make fossil fuel too expensive to use

Obama is desperate to energize his base who believe he hasn't gone far enough to the left, and Democratic Senators who have to run on his Obamacare record in 2014. Thus, the new, scary climate report.

'The current bad science is all based on a theory that the increase in the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere from the exhaust of the burning of fossil fuels leads to a dramatic increase in “the greenhouse effect” causing temperatures to skyrocket uncontrollably. This theory has failed to verify and is obviously dead wrong. But the politically funded and agenda driven scientists who have built their careers on this theory and live well on the 2.6 billion dollars of year of Federal grants for global warming/climate change research cling to this theory and bend the data spread to support the glorified claims in their reports and papers.'

Distracted driving, teens and cell phones

A well known TV personality in Columbus is promoting awareness about distracted driving. His beautiful teen daughter was killed last year. Statistics are already grim for teens and driving, but add in a smart phone and we're all at risk if we're sharing the road with them (as I was yesterday). "Currently, 77% of drivers talk on their phones while driving, 81% of young adults write text messages while driving, and 92% of young adults read text messages while driving. Drivers are 23-fold more likely to crash if texting while driving." But it's not just teens. I see a lot of moms chatting on the phone with kids in the car, watching her behavior. http://archpedi.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=1745570#WhatParentsCanDo

Other distractions about which older people need to be reminded: eating and drinking, changing channels on the radio or disc player, hands free phones, passengers in the car talking, checking the GPS, adjusting seats, taking off jacket or other clothing, looking for sun glasses, adjusting the visor to keep out glare, finding a tissue . . . keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road and the other drivers.

We need to revise our unfair tax system

“At the beginning of the 20th century, federal taxes accounted for 3 percent of the nation’s gross domestic product, and federal tax rules filled just a few hundred pages. But for the past sixty years, federal taxes have averaged about 18 percent of GDP, and today, federal tax rules and regulations span over 60,000 pages.

The federal government extracts over $2 trillion in federal taxes from families and businesses each year, which imposes a huge economic cost. The key problem with current federal tax laws is that high rates and the unequal treatment of economic activities create enormous distortions that reduce economic growth.

The reduced growth leaves people with less money to buy food, clothing, and other needed items.
The federal tax rules impose other costs too. The complexity of federal tax rules creates compliance and administrative costs, and it makes financial planning more difficult for individuals and businesses.

Furthermore, the hidden nature of many federal taxes imposes a cost in transparency. In particular, it is difficult for citizens to figure out the overall burden of taxes they are paying under the current system. “

The minimum wage as a campaign issue

The Ohio Food Assistance Program (federally known as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, SNAP) is designed to raise nutritional levels, to expand buying power, and to safeguard the health and well being of individuals in low-income households in Ohio. A household may consist of an individual or a group of individuals who live together and usually purchase, prepare, and eat their food together. The minimum wage in Ohio is $7.95 and in a 2 person household full time employment at minimum wage would put them $13,000 above qualifying for food stamps/assistance. Very few people stay at minimum. Studies show that low wage earners do better if they change jobs, which would mean having a good record at the first job.

Why don't the Democrats want something better than minimum for workers? Where are their demands for less regulation and a freer market which creates good paying jobs?

Cool or cruel?

Recently an abortion clinic worker posted a video of her own abortion. No way to know if it was real or just a way to get attention. But when I saw the video of the kidnappers of the Nigerian girls spew hate for Western culture, I think he must have that in mind--when a woman calls killing her own baby, "Cool."

Obama hits the dusty trail . . . again

The White House has nothing. And it's campaign season again. So . . . roll out climate change, racism, income inequality, and rape. Of course, there has always been climate change; Donald Sterling has always been a racist; in the same position with same life choices, there is no inequality; and the definition of rape keeps getting redefined. Never you mind. I know some voters who will fall for this.

Did you vote?

I voted today. Showed my ID, just as I do when I pick up a prescription, see a doctor, board a plane, cash a check or enter a government building. If I used a food pantry, I would show it; if I went to a free medical clinic, I would also show it.

“Stopping voter ID laws is crucial to Democrats who argue college students, the elderly and minorities will be prevented from voting under the new laws.

“It’s no surprise that these voter suppression efforts are being pushed by Republicans in key swing states,” said Democratic Governor Association spokeswoman Lis Smith.” http://dailycaller.com/2011/07/07/democrats-continue-fight-against-voter-id-laws/

So the elderly and minorities don’t need ID to get free medical care or government food, and students don’t fly or buy prescriptions drugs?

Book club selections for 2014-2015

Our book club has been meeting for 35 years with some of the original “founding mothers” still with the group, and which began in the Clintonville area of Columbus.  I joined in 2000.  I don’t read a lot, and it it weren’t for this wonderful group, I wouldn’t probably be reading any fiction. Yesterday we voted on the selections for next year, first Monday at 2 p.m. except where noted (we don’t meet in the summer).

September 8, Monuments men by Robert Edsel, led by Bev, co-meeting with the night group, private home

October, Snow in August by Pete Hamill, led by Carmen, private home

November, The book thief, by Markus Zusak, led by Marcie, at Panera’s

December, Citizens of London, by Lynne Olson, led by Carolyn, at private home.

January, The mother daughter Book Club, by Heather Frederick, led by Marti at Panera’s

February, Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver, led by Adrienne at Panera’s

March, My name is Mary Sutter by Robin Oliveira, led by Letha at Panera’s

April, Cain at Gettysburg, by Ralph Peters, led by Carmen at private home

Liberalism and liberals

About once a day, I hear (or read) about the hypocrisy of liberals who are not accepting of other views or who don’t allow conservatives the rights guaranteed in the constitution or demonstrate a lack of compassion.  Most recently it was about Condi Rice and the shameful behavior at Rutgers University, a school that in 2011 had the performer known as “Snooki” Polizzi as an invited speaker.

However, in my opinion, there is no hypocrisy—liberals have never been open to the ideas of others or respected those they don’t consider part of their class.

In The Revolt Against the Masses: How Liberalism Has Undermined the Middle Class by Fred Siegel (reviewed in First Things, June/July 2014) claims liberalism did not originate in progressivism, but instead began with a small group of intellectuals and writers, mostly based in Greenwich Village—H. L. Mencken, Sinclair Lewis, Lincoln Steffens, and Edmund Wilson.  Liberals “. . . had a quarrel with the industry, immigration and economic growth that had produced unprecedented prosperity in the United State.”  They developed a contempt for American culture and politics, and hostility toward the middle class, and in the 1930s many fell under the influence of Communism.

Reviewer Geoffrey Kabaservice in First Things says “Siegel makes some telling criticisms of the pre-World War II generations of left-leaning intellectuals.  They often were dismissive of the heritage and unique qualities of the United States, clueless about capitalism, too ready to see small business owners as a proto-fascist petty bourgeoisie, and too prone to thinking of big business as an oppressive force.” He was, however, critical of what he saw as many shortcomings in the book and thought Siegel “lacked objectivity.”

To me Siegel seems on target--like what Democrats (liberals, progressives, socialists, Communists) say about the middle class today, especially the Tea Party, conservatives and Republicans.

Liberals, Siegel says, love bureaucracy, don’t understand the people they claim to want to help, and expelled whites from the cities which they then bankrupted.

Michael Barone loved it. “From the dumbing down of education to extreme environmentalism, from anti-family poverty programs to free-speech curbs on campuses, the excesses of our times are laid out like the pieces of a puzzle. It is a clear-eyed vision of how we got to this troubled place.”
